Be Active, Be Smart, Take Care of your heart

After receiving an overwhelming amount of motto suggestions from classes throughout the school we finally have a motto. So much creativity and talent! We read each and every one and decided on a shortlist of 6. Following this everyone in the school voted for their favourite one (all classes, Ms Burke, teachers, Sheila, Joan, Jim and Martina). The winning motto is displayed above and this was suggested by Ellen Murphy in Ms Sheridans class (4th-Room 12). Well done Ellen.
Other mottos that made the shortlist
  • Get Up, Get Out, Jump Up and Play, The Active Kids are here to stay (Alyiah Lennox-Room 12). Came 2nd place
  • Commit to be fit (Lucie Dunne-Room 11)
  • Get up off your seat and use your feet (Lucie Dunne), Get off your seat and Get on your feet (Aoibh Murphy), Don't sit on your seat Get up on your feet (Niamh Clancy-Room 15).
  • Whatever the weather, We can be active together (Aoife Hughes and Caitlin Byrne-Room 11)
  • Skip, Jump, Run, Being Healthy is Fun (Alesia Doyle-Room 12)

Thank you everyone!

Room 15 decided not to tell Mark (GAA coach, Na Fianna) about Drop Everything and Dance. He got a surprise when our Friday song came on but had no hesitation about getting involved along with the rest of the school:-)!

Some of our 6th class girls decided to take our training session after school this week. They planned, executed and supervised the warm up, stretches, drills and match. They also motivated and encouraged the team throughout the session. Ms Devlin and Ms Ryan were very impressed with their professionalism and may be a little worried for their jobs:-). It was a very enjoyable session and they showed great capability and confidence throughout. Well done Ruth, Emily, Amy, Anna and Sarah.

St. Brigids will be participating in the first Dublin basketball league this year. We have been teamed with Scoil Mobhi, D7 ET and Oliver Plunketts in Malahide. Starting after the mid term break, we will be playing our matches. These will take place every 2-3 weeks. The team will comprise of pupils from 6th calss. The girls will also be doing table officiating at each game keeping score and time. We look forward to great games, fun and participation by all in the lead up to Christmas. We will then play in the National Basketball Arena in February. Thanks to Ms.                                                       Phelan for setting all of this up and co-ordinating the league.

Ms Phelans 6th class applied for a place on the programme 'Ready Steady Sport' a few weeks ago. They were successful and RTE came out to St. Brigids to record the girls taking part in a sports challenge in the hall. The children had a great time and what made it even more fun was the recording of Ms Phelan's forfeit:-). Following this Ms Phelan took two girls nominated by the class over to the RTE studios to appear on the sports quiz show. Anna Farrell and Louise Mc Guinness did a great job and represented the school very well. The girls were against Scoil Assaim and victory was ours on the day. Well done to Ms Phelan and all in 6th class. Follow this link to watch the programme: http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10329444/

We held a very successful 'Bling your Bike' event on Wednesday 8th October. There was a huge turnout of bikes, scooters and flickers and a lot of work went into preparing for it as you can see from the slideshow below. A really fantastic display.  We had a great time parading them despite the weather. Thanks Ms. Ryan for organising it and her 6th class for helping out so much. A great job was done by all. We hope it encourages everyone in St. Brigid's to get active and make an effort to walk/cycle to school.

We are continuing the very successful playground games set up two years ago. Different classes have a chance to participate one day a week. The 6th classes do a fantastic job of coordinating and setting up these games. It is a great way of encouraging extra activity in the yard and they are enjoyed by all. They are in operation in both the Junior and Senior yards so the whole school has an opportunity to be involved. Our playground leaders now have bibs to identify them and we have reviewed the activities.

Please feel free to give us your ideas by popping them in the suggestion box in the hall. Some of you have already come up with some wonderful ideas for an Active School Motto. You have a few more days to add some more before we choose one.  After this feel free to give us other suggestions about activities or events or feedback on things that are happening. The committee will check this box regularly. Thanks.
