St. Brigid's Active School Flag |

We've been working so hard on becoming an 'Active School' this year. Our parents association are joining us in helping to achieve our first active flag and have come up with a fantastic idea for their main fundraiser. It is a sponsored cycle and pedal powered cinema. The idea is to get as many adults (parents, teachers and community members) to do a sponsored cycle to raise money for the school but all the power generated by the cyclists will run the cinema for the evening. We really can't wait. Tickets available every morning this week in school. Please visit the Parents Association section of the school website for more details or click here.

What a fantastic week for everyone. We held a hugely successful multi-cultural week full of activities and fun events. As part of our Active Flag initiative we had a sports day where different countries raced against each other in an obstacle course. We had Poland V Romania in the fourth classes, Georgia V China in 6th, Egypt V Lithuania in 1st and so on. Our ASF committee came up with the course, set it up, showed the younger classes a how to do it and tidied up afterwards. Well done everyone. We all really enjoyed it. Check out our pictures below! We're back at our Super Troopers programme after the Christmas break. We're committed to making it part of our homework and our committee will be checking into all classes to see how it's going. There are different, fun activities to do each nght and we want to make a big effort for the new year. This is Week 14. Check your journal each night and don't forget to get it signed at the end of the week. Next week you can also fill in your sleep diary to see if you're getting all the rest you need for an active, healthy lifestyle. St.Brigid's only entered the Cumann na mbunscol league in camogie for the first time last year. Following a hugely successful and enjoyable league we held trials this week for our new school team. It will comprise of girls from 5th and 6th class and we wish them the very best of luck. Have a look at some pictures from our trials on two very cold, fresh January day. We certainly needed to keep moving. Well done everyone. We've decided to continue with swimming this year due to the success of the initiative last year with 3rd and 4th classes. We are on week 3 of an eight week programme. This is part of the aquatics strand in our PE curriculum. We go to Finglas Leisure Centre and the children really enjoy the lessons. They have fantastic instructors and it's wonderful to see the progress they make over the eight weeks of lessons. It's a fun filled hour and fantastic exercise too!! For the month of January we set up a sports achievement display on the wall beside our ASF noticeboard. Children from all over the school brought in their photographs with medals and trophies won in a wide variety of sports. It's clear we have many budding stars in our midst and we are really keeping active outside of school too through Irish dance, hip- hop, ballet, GAA, kickboxing, swimming, gymnastics, basketball and much more. People also brought in photographs of well known sports people they have met. Katie Taylor, Bernard Brogan and our local star from Na Fianna -Jonny Cooper all feature on our wall of fame.. An inspiring lot!!! Thanks so much to everyone who brought in photographs. Lots of people also brought in trophies and medals and discussed these in class. At December's meeting we decided to get special badges to identify our ASF committee members. Check out our lovely new badges complete with ASF logo here! Pupils, staff committee members and Ms Burke all have these badges. We are going to wear them to ASF meetings, while we are doing our spot checks in classrooms and at all events connected to our Active Flag so people can easily identify us. Happy New Year from everyone on our Active Schools Committee. We can't wait to start work again and plan lots of fun activities for 2015. Keep up the great work on your Super Troopers and Drop eveything and Dance. We'll be checking in often and choosing our Active Class of the month very soon. Reminder to use the ASF suggestion box in the hall and check in here for information on everything that's going on. Remember our motto........... 'Be Active Be Smart Take Care of your Heart'. |
